Unitary is hiringSenior ML Ops Engineer
Description
The company
Unitary’s purpose is to make the internet safer to improve lives and create a fairer world. We are a rapidly growing start-up developing best-in-class AI models that automatically detect and classify harmful content online. Our AI combines the strengths of human moderation (accurate video classification) with the benefits of automated detection (speed and scalability). This cutting-edge technology will help us solve real-world problems in content moderation and beyond. We believe in an online world free from harm, where we can trust AI to make safe and fair decisions.
We have raised about $25M in VC funding from top-tier funds, including Creandum and Plural, and operate at a significant scale - analysing millions of images and videos daily from the world’s largest platforms. But we are just at the beginning of our journey - and we are very excited about our plans for growth over the coming year and beyond!
The role
We are now looking for a senior Machine Learning Operations Engineer to help build our new Machine Learning Platform to keep up with the best-in-class models in our field. Your deep knowledge in ML Operations will be crucial in transforming our approach to machine learning and advancing our technological capabilities.
Your mission will be to ensure all Unitary’s models are working at their maximum performance by creating the architectures our data scientists need to productionise our models. You will run and monitor our machine learning models as they come to market, initially through hands-on support and gradually through self-service tooling for them to deliver value autonomously.
As part of this role, you will:
- Design, develop and operate a new ML Data platform that addresses current limitations and scales with our product strategy
- Define and manage tables and transformations in Delta Lake to support data and ML pipelines
- Design, implement, and optimise APIs for ML model deployment
- Collaborate with ML Engineers and product teams to integrate machine learning models into production environments
- Ensure AI services' reliability, observability, availability, and performance
- Make key decisions on how we implement machine learning and computer vision, shaping the future of Unitary
Requirements
You
We are looking for someone who is as excited about Unitary’s mission as we are, who wants to have a large impact at an early-stage startup, and be a key part of defining Unitary’s future as one of our early employees. We need versatile people who are happy to get stuck into whatever needs doing, and are ready to learn and grow with the company.
For this particular role, we need a proactive Machine Learning expert who isn’t afraid to present and try new ideas. You must be a good communicator who is comfortable taking the lead in change management and who can bring others with you on the journey. You embrace a product mindset in everything you do and have a genuine curiosity for solving current and future customer challenges.
We would love to hear from you if:
- You have very strong Python and Data Engineering skills with comprehensive experience implementing new production-orchestrated machine learning pipelines
- You can design and implement robust performance data architectures, and have the ability to successfully engage a broader audience in how to utilise them effectively
- You truly enjoy uncovering, understanding and assessing developer pain points, and you have previous successes designing and implementing tooling to relieve such pain points
- You can create new inference/training pipelines and frameworks for our product machine learning models, including generative models such as LLMs, VLMs and LAMs
- You are excited about the idea of establishing new engineering standards for our Machine Learning capability, working with others to ensure they’re impactful
- You can understand how infrastructure is deployed through K8s, and you have knowledge of how to deploy some elements of infrastructure yourself
- You thrive in a collaborative environment where group output and team achievements weigh heavier than individual input
- You can travel to London four times per year (quarterly in association with company offsites)
It would be even better, but not essential, if you have:
- Previous experience working in a fully remote, international team
- Previous start-up experience
- Knowledge of CI/CD practices and tools like GitHub Actions.
- Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform.
- Experience with LLMs and a keen interest in staying abreast of the latest advancements in AI technologies.
- Knowledge and experience using Apache Spark
This role will report to the VP of Engineering and can be placed anywhere within 3 hours of the UK time zone.
