About Boltz

Boltz is a public benefit company building the next generation of AI-powered molecular modeling tools to make biology programmable and accelerate drug discovery, while keeping frontier capabilities broadly accessible. Boltz-1, Boltz-2, and BoltzGen are open models trusted by 100,000+ scientists across biotech and academia, and used in programs at every Top 20 pharma as well as leading agrichemical and industrial research organizations.
We deliver these capabilities through Boltz Lab, our platform for running our latest models and design agents as reliable, production-grade tools. Boltz Lab is designed around real chemistry and biology workflows, so teams can start from a target and a hypothesis and quickly generate, evaluate, and rank candidate molecules. We provide the compute, the scalable infrastructure, and the collaboration layer, so scientists can iterate faster and stay focused.

About the role

We are looking for a Security Engineer to own and lead Boltz's security program end-to-end. As our first dedicated security hire, you will define the security strategy, build the foundations of our security posture, and ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of our systems, data, and products.
This is a high-ownership role where you will shape security practices from the ground up, working across engineering, infrastructure, and operations. You will be responsible for establishing and driving security initiatives, managing compliance efforts, and embedding security into everything we build. You will act as the primary security authority within the company, advising leadership on risk and setting the direction for how we protect our platform and our users' data.

What you'll do

Here's both sections working together:
What you'll do
  • Define and lead Boltz's security strategy, setting the direction for how we protect our platform, systems, and users' data.
  • Embed secure-by-design patterns into our platform and development lifecycle in close collaboration with engineering and infrastructure teams.
  • Own the company's compliance program, driving certification efforts across frameworks such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001.
  • Evaluate and implement security tooling for monitoring, detection, and compliance validation.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, penetration testers, and security vendors.
  • Build security awareness across the company through documentation, playbooks, and training.
  • Serve as the go-to security advisor for leadership, product, and engineering teams.

About you

Essentials:
  • Significant experience in information security, with a track record of building, owning, or leading a security program end-to-end — including policies, documentation, compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, or equivalent), and audit readiness.
  • Hands-on experience across core security operations: risk assessments, threat modeling, vulnerability management, and incident response from detection through resolution.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud security fundamentals and experience securing modern cloud-native environments.
  • Comfortable working across engineering, product, and operations to translate security requirements into practical controls, and willing to make pragmatic trade-offs under real-world constraints.
Nice to have:
  • Experience standing up a security program at an early-stage or fast-moving startup.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and embedding security into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience managing or supporting penetration testing and external security assessments.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, OSCP, or equivalent.
  • Background in security tooling, automation, or internal tool development for vulnerability detection and compliance validation.
  • Prior experience working in regulated or data-sensitive industries such as biotech, healthcare, or life sciences.

What we offer

  • Opportunity to drive outsized real-world impact by building tools that empower thousands of scientists across the industry.
  • Work alongside one of the most talent-dense teams in the field.
  • Significant ownership and independence, with responsibility for driving projects from concept to deployment.
  • Highly competitive salary with substantial equity ownership.
